Style Inspiration: Edith Head

Outfit Details- Shirt: h&m (men's), Tie and skirt: Vintage, Belt: Forever 21, Shoes: Ross, Sunglasses: Urban Outfitters
Edith Head is the bomb diggity. In case you don't know, she was one of the most famous costume designers in Hollywood history, having a career that spanned about six decades, from the 20's to the 80's. Her last movie ("Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," 1982) was released shortly after her death. Throughout her career, she received 8 Academy awards for best costume design, and 35 nominations. She claimed to have partook in over 1,000 movies, but as far as I know, there exists no correct list of every movie she ever worked on, but at the end of the book "Edith Head's Hollywood," there is a very long list of as many films as could be accounted for. She dressed such stars as Mae West, Bette Davis, Audry Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, and just about every body else.
I recently read her career-based autobiography, "The Dress Doctor" and the biographical book written after her death using tape-recorded memoirs she made before she died, "Edith Head's Hollywood."
I decided that I had to pay a homage to her with this outfit because the night before, our school theater company announced the positions for next year, and I got Costume Representative, who is "in charge of all costume elements of DPTC productions and costume laison to the costume crew and Theater Manager.  This person also coordinates costume rentals." I'm pretty much the only returning member of costume crew this year, and thus the only person that wanted the job, but it's still pretty exciting for me. This summer I'm going to be working on cleaning up our costume room with the help of some of my friends, and next year I'll have to recruit an all new team of people, as everyone who was in it last year either graduated or would rather be on stage than back stage.
Edith Head wore mainly skirt suits in shades of grey, black, white, or beige, usually with simple white blouses underneath. She said that is was so that when she was dressing someone, she wanted them to look in the mirror and see themselves in the costume, not her. She didn't want to put a woman in a beautiful gown covered in sequins and have her see Edith reflected in each one.
A few pictures of Edith Head:
Edith Head began her career as a sketch artist, a job she got by borrowing her art students' work, and passing it off as her own. On her first day, when she admitted to knowing nothing about sketching costumes, her employers took her under their wings and taught her.
Edith almost always wore dark glasses, because she couldn't see without them but hoped that if they were tinted, people might not notice them.
Most people will notice at some point that Edith Head never smiles in pictures, but only a few exist because when she was younger, her canine teeth never grew in. After being teased for it, she trained herself to only smile tight, close-lipped smiles.
In case you noticed, Edna Mode (from The Incredibles) was most-likely based off of Edith Head. The creator never confirmed nor denied it, but...
I wish you all a glitterific day!

Polos and Checks

Outfit details- Polo and skirt: Vintage, Tights: Target, Shoes: Daddyo's
I wore this a few weeks ago before school got out. I got this checkered skirt at St. Joseph's thrift store in Carpenteria. The polo shirt is vintage and belonged/belongs to my mom, but I borrowed/stole it because it's cool. Pairing them together made me feel kind of like a waitress at a mini golf course, but also kind of New Wave-y, but both are pretty cool.
I teased up my hair in the back, put in my extensions, and wore a red plaid head band. I did thick black winged eyeliner, and dark red lipstick.
I hope you all have a glitterific day!
Love,
Chloe

Theater Awards Night

Outfit Details- Ruffled Blouse: (Was my sister's, so I don't know), Crinoline: Sam's, Gloves: DIY,  Pink Blouse: Vintage, Boots: Betsey Johnson (I added tulle instead of laces), Clips: Forever 21
This is what I wore two weeks ago for our Theater Awards Night. Every year, our school's theater company, DPTC, has an end of the year award ceremony, where awards are given to everybody for various things. I received the "Excellence in Costume Crew" award:
The girl giving the award has known my sister for a while, so her precursor to the award was something along the lines of "This girl: her sister's an old friend of mine, and she's... Colorful. She has a lot of confidence in what she wears, and that's important." and at that point every one of my friends laughed and started to lean over each other, and gave me these wide-eyed knowing looks of anticipation. When they announced my name, they all clapped really loud, and my boots made a happy little clippety-clack noise when I walked up to the podium. There was a boy who was holding all of the girls hands when they'd walk up the stairs, probably because they were all wearing heels and would probably trip without the help, but since I was wearing combat-boots, I offered him my arm instead.
Although most people wore their prom dresses and heels, I wore a blue floral ruffled top with my black crinoline. I wore them over a black lacey slip, which peaked out the top and blended in with the bottom, and I really liked how it looked. I wore charcoal over-the-knee socks, and my ruffled combat boots, which I like to wear for special occasions, or just when I feel fancy. I've previously replaced the laces with aqua tulle ribbon. I also wore fishnet fingerless gloves, made from a modified pair of tights. Because it was night and a little bit chilly, I also wore a vintage pale pink silky Chinese-style shirt as a jacket. I wore my hair to the side with my violet extensions, with black and gray fabric flower clips.
Personally, I just really completely loved my outfit for that night. It was really pretty but kind of dark and over-all just me.
I hope you all have a glitterific day!

The Social Distortion Shirt

Outfit Details- Shirt and Scarf: Vintage, Skirt: h&m, Tights: Asos, Socks: Betsey Johnson, Shoes: Daddyo's
Ok, since I have a bunch of pictures I want to post, I decided I may as well put up a few sets tonight.
My parents have this big wooden trunk in our living room, filled with their old clothes from when they were younger. I always steal my mom's vintage dresses, because she worked at a vintage store in the 80's and has a collection of amazing dresses. When I was younger I would always go and use the clothes as costumes, but now I always borrow stuff just to wear. There's all kinds of cool Punk and New Wave pins (a few of which I borrowed and put on my denim jacket), bleach-stained denim vests, old jackets, and band T-shirts.
I recently went digging through the trunk, and found this awesome Social Distortion shirt, which I promptly borrowed/stole and have yet to give back. Although it's a few sizes too big, it's currently one of my favorite shirts. It's supper comfortable and has this amazing old-clothes smell. Plus, I just like Social Distortion. I listen to the "Mommy's Little Monster" vinyl on our record player a lot. I also like the colors in it, which look awesome with my maroon skirt, or with my red plaid skirt.
I wore the shirt with my maroon skirt, tattoo-tights, frilly socks, the cat shoes, and a black and white head scarf.
I hope you all have a glitterific day!

Teal to Purple

Outfit Details- Dress: Vintage, Collar: DIY, Tights and Belt: Forever 21, Shoes: Doc Martins
This is the first post I've done with pictures taken in my room since my very first few posts, which were just barely less than a year ago. These pictures were from a couple of weeks ago, during school. It's really weird because right now I'm working on totally redoing my room, so these pictures are completely different from what my room looks like right now. Currently, the carpet is ripped out (and thrown out the window), so the floors are just the rough wood underneath; the walls are now a dark violet/plum purple, with one in teal. Other than a ladder and some debris, every single thing from my room is strewn across our living room. This makes it kind of difficult to coordinate pretty outfits, so luckily I have a ton stored up, although I did take a few pictures of my outfit today.
As a quick tour of my room circa-three days ago, the above pictures show my window and desk, a few of the walls which I cover in magazine clippings and pages, my Ingrid Michaelson and Regina Spektor posters, and the mirror above my dresser, filled with movie stubs, paper dolls, and various artwork and zines. Below are my two shelves, which I am very proud of. The top one houses a collection of my books, organized by color. The bottom shelf has all of my witch-y things, like skulls (plastic), candles, flowers, my Ouija board, and some various other stuff. From it hangs my favorite string of moon and sun lights, and my favorite purple witch-hat, which I hold a propensity for wearing with my favorite black pajamas late at night. Above my books I have a printed out version of a print by Emily Martin, which depicts a boy and girl sitting on a giant pile of books, accompanied by the Morrissey quote "There's more to life than books, you know, but not much more," from the song "Handsome Devil."
Oh, I also redid my hair by putting turquoise/teal over the lavender part of my hair, and leaving the violet tips. It was probably the messiest I've ever gotten while doing my hair. It had nothing to do with the color itself, but I think I was just not even trying to keep the dye off of my face, and it (of course) got all over my face. I thought it looked kind of cool, though, so I took a picture before I washed it off.
I wore a vintage dress with a sparkly purple belt, a collar that I cut off of a thrift-store men's shirt, mint colored lacey tights that you can't really see, and maroon docs.
I hope you all have a glitterific day!
Love,
Chloe

Bring Out the Veils! (Style Inpiration: Lydia Deetz)

Outfit Details- Dress, Sweater, and Tutu: #forever21, Tights: Kmart, Shoes: Target, Hat: I have no idea..., Veil: A piece of lace cut from an old Halloween costume
It's Summer, and you know what that means, don't you? Bring out the veils! Technically, I wore this outfit a couple of weeks ago, but I love it. Luckily, these first few days of freedom (school got out on Thursday) have been perfectly over-cast and gloomy, but a few weeks ago the sun came out with a vengeance of no-cloud-in-sight-90-something-degree weather. For someone who hates the sun with a vampiracal loathing, and loves cloudy rainy weather, it was terrible. So, I broke out some Lydia Deetz-inspired veiled hats and black outfits. Lydia, of course, referring to the self-proclaimed "strange and unusual" girl from Beetlejuice (Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice!). In case you were wondering, this is how to be your best goth self, as told by Lydia Deetz. You'll have to remember to "Take a dance break, because goths secretly love dancing. Especially to Harry Belafonte."
Even wearing veils and layers of sunblock every day at school, I tanned. I don't have anything against tans or anything, and I love how it looks on other people, but I just like being uber pale. I think it's because then I can at least pretend I'm a vampire, without having to wear quite so much gothic makeup.  That's really difficult, though, when I tan super easily. None of my friends believe me when I try and tell them that, because I really am just super pale. The other day, though, I was showing my friend how "tan" my arm had gotten (which is basically just kind of pale to other people), and at first she was just kind of like "Chloe, that's still really pale," but then she looked at it again and agreed that "Well, I guess for Chloe-standards, that's kind of tan." Just noting: this is in no way a race thing or something, I just really like vampires.
I've spent the past two days doing just about nothing but watching cartoons on Netflix and sleeping. So far, I've watched the whole first season of "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends," a bunch of "Ruby Gloom," and "Adventure Time." I also just watched "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (we have a copy, so not on Netflix), and remembered how much I love the music in it. When I first saw it I was just kind of starting to listen to The Smiths and stuff like that, and now I noticed how much they mention The Smiths. The two characters' bedrooms that we see in it both have Smiths posters all over their walls, and "Asleep" is played and mentioned multiple times. I always think it's cool when I watch movies that I haven't seen in a while and I recognize all of these songs and things that I'd never heard when I saw it before.
For my outfit, I wore a black dress over a black tutu, black Kmart tights with a stripe of glitter running up each side, black oxfords, a black and white striped cardigan over my shoulders like a cape, and a quite fabulous hat and veil combo. Although this was the only one I took pictures of, I wore some sort of wide-brimmed hat (with or without a veil) with each outfit that week. I took an old black and white sunhat, and just pinned a bit of spider-web lace to it. I cut the lace off of an old Halloween costume. I did my hair Lydia-inspired, too. I pulled some of the back up into a half-ponytail, teased it out, and sprayed it with some hairspray. They kind of came out throughout the day, but I divided my bangs into 4 sections, then sprayed them, too.
I hope you all have glitterifically gloomy days!
Love,
Chloe

The Riot Grrrl Jacket

Outfit Details: Dress and Belt- #forever21, Jacket- Thrifted/DIY, Tights- Asos, Boots- (knock-off) Doc Martins
Hello everyone! Yeah, so I haven't posted anything in about a month.... I think that's because it's almost the end of the school year (Like, school ends in four days or something), and that's when you realize you're almost failing certain subjects, and you kind of have to put all of your energy into not having to retake those next year, and then once you've done your work for those you just want to sleep and not do anything. Fortunately, and kind of oddly, I did take pictures at least once a week or so of my outfits, and I've got a ton that I've never gotten a chance to post, so for a good week or so when summer begins I'll be able to hibernate and just post old pictures instead of having to actually put together outfits. Also, so many awesome thing shave happened that I'll have to do posts on later. For example: I went to see Kate Nash in concert on May 10th, and I hugged her and she signed my vinyl, and she took a picture with me. it was possibly one of the greatest moments of my life.
So, about this outfit: I wore the green dress that I got at Forever 21 in December, which is, I tell you with great pleasure, Kate Nash-approved. As in, I wore it to the concert and she said she loved my dress, and asked where I got it. Obviously, this is now my favorite dress. I wore it over a pair of polka dotted tights and my docs. I also wore (for a week straight) my new denim jacket. I bought it as just a plain, lightly worn jacket at the thrift store, then pimped it out with paint and buttons. I painted a ribcage on the back in white paint, and made a patch using a square of vintage fabric, with pink paint and glitter spelling out "Riot Grrrl" with a feminist-fist. I also made a few pins, including a red felt heart that I embroidered "feminist" in cursive on, a small white-felt-ribbon with "feminism is cool" painted on, and my feminist rosette. Sensing a theme? On one side i just sewed on a crap-load of vintage buttons and a few pendants from necklaces. My mom let me add a few of her old pins since these pictures were taken, including a round one saying "Johnny Rotten, Not to be Forgotten," another with Frank Sinatra's face accompanied by the (very true) phrase "It's Sinatra's World, We Just Live in It."
I also dyed by hair lavender, and my extensions violet. Since then, I've made my hair turquoise with violet tips, and left the extensions the same.
Regarding my pictures, I really don't know what happened while I was taking them, except that they're amazing. For whatever reason I ended up looking like a monster in one and a ballerina in another. I have no idea what I was doing while the camera was going, but it produced some awesome pictures, including the amazing glitter-shot at the end. My camera and tripod are covered in glitter, but it was completely worth it.
I wish you all a glitterific day!
Love,
Chloe
