Miss Quincea

Outfit Details- Dress: Hand-me-down, Shorts: Vintage, Tights: h&m, Boots: (knock-off) Doc Martins, Bows: Claire's

 So, this is what I wore two weeks ago on my birthday. I wore a black lace dress with lavender lace bloomer-shorts, and striped tights. I put my hair in pigtails and black bows. I also wore four bracelets: A pink glitter-filled rubber one from the arcade in the bowing alley, a rainbow skull one from my godmother, a red heart one from the flea market, and a green kind of wicker one that my friend brought back for me from I think Mexico.
Since I turned fifteen, I decided that I needed to have a Quinceanera, even if I have pretty much no Hispanic heritage. Since I'm me, it also had to involve zombies. Here are the pictures from my Zombie-Quinceanera:

 I wore a thrift-store wedding dress that we found for 20 dollars. I laid it out in the backyard and burned a bunch of holes in it, then splattered it with fake blood. I also had a "Miss Quince" sash, and a half-melted crown.

 My guests included two other zombies and two humans.

 

 For my cake, I had three different-colored layers (one of which broke, but we figured it was a zombie cake, so it kind of worked), with white and red icing. We made it one of those barbie-cakes, but I took the barbie outside first and burned/melted half of her face with a lighter. I stuck half-gummy worms in it, and filled the cracks with black icing.

After we ate cake and did presents, we watched "Warm Bodies," which is one of my favorite movies, then we made a giant blanket fort. We used six sheets, slinging one over the beam, and tying the others to it. We took all of the cushions off of the couches and laid them on the floor like a huge mattress. Whenever my sister or I make a fort using one set of sheets that are covered in cats, we always call it a "Kitty-Cat Castle," after one that she made a few years ago.

Style Inspiration: Edith Head

Edith Head is the bomb diggity. In case you don't know, she was one of the most famous costume designers in Hollywood history, having a career that spanned about six decades, from the 20's to the 80's. Her last movie ("Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," 1982) was released shortly after her death. Throughout her career, she received 8 Academy awards for best costume design, and 35 nominations. She claimed to have partook in over 1,000 movies, but as far as I know, there exists no correct list of every movie she ever worked on, but at the end of the book "Edith Head's Hollywood," there is a very long list of as many films as could be accounted for. She dressed such stars as Mae West, Bette Davis, Audry Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, and just about every body else.
I recently read her career-based autobiography, "The Dress Doctor" and the biographical book written after her death using tape-recorded memoirs she made before she died, "Edith Head's Hollywood."
I decided that I had to pay a homage to her with this outfit because the night before, our school theater company announced the positions for next year, and I got Costume Representative, who is "in charge of all costume elements of DPTC productions and costume laison to the costume crew and Theater Manager.  This person also coordinates costume rentals." I'm pretty much the only returning member of costume crew this year, and thus the only person that wanted the job, but it's still pretty exciting for me. This summer I'm going to be working on cleaning up our costume room with the help of some of my friends, and next year I'll have to recruit an all new team of people, as everyone who was in it last year either graduated or would rather be on stage than back stage.
Edith Head wore mainly skirt suits in shades of grey, black, white, or beige, usually with simple white blouses underneath. She said that is was so that when she was dressing someone, she wanted them to look in the mirror and see themselves in the costume, not her. She didn't want to put a woman in a beautiful gown covered in sequins and have her see Edith reflected in each one.

 Edith Head began her career as a sketch artist, a job she got by borrowing her art students' work, and passing it off as her own. On her first day, when she admitted to knowing nothing about sketching costumes, her employers took her under their wings and taught her.

 Edith almost always wore dark glasses, because she couldn't see without them but hoped that if they were tinted, people might not notice them.

 Most people will notice at some point that Edith Head never smiles in pictures, but only a few exist because when she was younger, her canine teeth never grew in. After being teased for it, she trained herself to only smile tight, close-lipped smiles.

In case you noticed, Edna Mode (from The Incredibles) was most-likely based off of Edith Head. The creator never confirmed nor denied it, but...

Theater Awards Night

 This is what I wore two weeks ago for our Theater Awards Night. Every year, our school's theater company, DPTC, has an end of the year award ceremony, where awards are given to everybody for various things. I received the "Excellence in Costume Crew" award:

The girl giving the award has known my sister for a while, so her precursor to the award was something along the lines of "This girl: her sister's an old friend of mine, and she's... Colorful. She has a lot of confidence in what she wears, and that's important." and at that point every one of my friends laughed and started to lean over each other, and gave me these wide-eyed knowing looks of anticipation. When they announced my name, they all clapped really loud, and my boots made a happy little clippety-clack noise when I walked up to the podium. There was a boy who was holding all of the girls hands when they'd walk up the stairs, probably because they were all wearing heels and would probably trip without the help, but since I was wearing combat-boots, I offered him my arm instead.
Although most people wore their prom dresses and heels, I wore a blue floral ruffled top with my black crinoline. I wore them over a black lacey slip, which peaked out the top and blended in with the bottom, and I really liked how it looked. I wore charcoal over-the-knee socks, and my ruffled combat boots, which I like to wear for special occasions, or just when I feel fancy. I've previously replaced the laces with aqua tulle ribbon. I also wore fishnet fingerless gloves, made from a modified pair of tights. Because it was night and a little bit chilly, I also wore a vintage pale pink silky Chinese-style shirt as a jacket. I wore my hair to the side with my violet extensions, with black and gray fabric flower clips.
Personally, I just really completely loved my outfit for that night. It was really pretty but kind of dark and over-all just me.

Happy Zombie-Jesus Day!

Happy Easter/ Zombie-Jesus Day! Ok, again, sorry I haven't posted in a week, but I haven't really been on the computer for more than a few minutes at a time because I've been helping my mom with photo-shoots, and cleaning my room, and doing all kinds of things all week (which was spring break for me and most school-aged people). Today, my mom and I drove down to the Ventura flea-market, which was super awesome, and I got three new very well-priced vintage dresses, a cool vintage skirt, and an alligator suitcase, all of which I'm sure will soon be shown, but I wanted to post zombie pictures/tutorials I took on Tuesday (I think it actually might have been Wednesday now that I think about it).
You can't say that zombies aren't Easter-y. Jesus rose from the dead, and isn't that the whole point of Easter? The whole reborn/coming back to life/new life thing? Plus, zombies are pale. Pastel.
Since it was spring break, and I didn't want to spend the whole time on the computer, I needed activities to keep me occupied. And what better activity than zombiefication? I got my friend Ember to come over, and then dressed us both in some ghoulish threads (is threads still relevant slang? It should be.), and zombiefied us. I don't think we gave me a back-story, but hers was that she was hit in the head with a brick (resulting in a head wound), then fell/was thrown into a freezing river, where she got hypothermia. The result (after a little decomposition) looked like this:

Here's basically how I did it:

 I used white clown makeup super lightly all over her face, blending it down her neck, and then just a little bit on her collarbones (so that they would look pronounced, giving her a more gaunt look). I had her put on super thick black eyeliner, then used black and gray eyeshadow on her upper lids, doing sort of an exaggerated smokey eye-type thing, then used blue under her eyes, so that they'd look kind of sunken and dead.

I used a light blue eye shadow with a thin paintbrush to paint veins near major arteries (the neck, the temples, etc.). I just mixed some water with the makeup so it'd be easier to work with.

I didn't get a good picture of just this on it's own (and I should have done it before the veins but I forgot), but I used gray and blue makeup on a blush-brush to enhance the whole gaunt look. I used it under her cheek bones and collar bones, to make them stand out more. You can also use this near the mouth or on the sides of the nose if you want to look super sunken and corpse-like,

 For her head wound, I used some bright red stage makeup on a Q-tip to draw a line from her hair-line down to her jaw, being careful to follow where something drippy would go, which kind of curves around the bone structure of your face, not just in a straight line. I put extra just at the start of her hair so that it looked like it'd pooled up before dripping. If you (like me) have only ultra-bright red to use, which is not a very good color for aged-zombie blood (any dried blood should be more of a rust color), you can take any sort of brassy brown, or even gold-ish eyeshadow and use that over the red to turn it more of a blood red.
After this, I used a little bit of the white face-makeup on her lips, to drain the color, then dabbed light-blue eyeshadow on them, but not in a perfect lipstick kind of way. I wanted it to look more like her lips were being frozen, so it was more haphazard.

I think for mine I had been stood up for prom or something and then died for my back story, although I'm not quite sure how it happened. Anyway, mine looked like this:

I don't know why, but the cheek-hole thing is my favorite type of decay whenever I do zombie makeup. It's just really fun, and this one's definitely the best one I've done. I outlined a kind of squiggly, imperfect shape on my cheek, then drew some teeth shapes inside. I filled it it (minus the teeth) with red stage makeup, then did the same thing as Ember's wound, putting some brassy color over it, to make it a more bloody red.

My sister gave me this thing of peel-off face-mask for Christmas a while ago, and I've always thought I could use it to do a cool makeup, and I finally got around to trying it. It dries clear, so I put a little bit of it around the boarder of my cheek-hole shape, then waited for it to dry. While I waited, I applied my favorite black lipstick.

Sorry, I didn't get many pictures of the step-by-step of this, but once the mask stuff dried, I rubbed the edges that were touching the wound a little bit so that they just barely peeled off, then finished coloring my wound. I put white stage-makeup on the teeth, outlining them in blackish purple, and drew some veins in purple. I put some yellow around the wound, to make it look kind of puss-y and gross, and also used some blue too. One piece of the mask accidentally peeled all the way off, but I just put some red underneath it and made it look like an extra little wound. All together, I think it looked pretty rad. Plus, it'd really fun to peel off later:

I also may have put multiple colors of food coloring in my hair because I was bored and wanted to have a rainbow on my head.

 Of course, sense we were all dressed up, we had to go do a quick photo shoot.

And of course, while we were at it, why not dress up as witches raising the dead?

Ember's zombie outfit-
Dress: a hand-me-down from my sister, so I don't know, but I added a corset to the back, which reminds me of Frankenstein's monster for some reason. Gloves: DIY, Socks: Sock It To Me, Shoes: (We actually each got a heel and a flat, to exaggerate our zombie-limps) Heel from Payless, Flat from Target.

Dress: Same deal as Ember's (including the corset, but I pinned up one side of it so it'd look kind of tattered), Fishnets (modified to be worn as a shirt): DIY? Originally from F21, Tights: h&m, Shoes: Heel from Payless, Flat from Target.

Tank-top: Hers, so I don't know, Skirt: Vintage, Veil: My old dress-up box, Hat: Same as veil

Slip: Vintage, Fishnets and tights are the same as in the zombie outfit. Veil and Cape from my old dress-up box.
