Polka Dots

As I would hope everyone does, I just love polka dots. I don't know what it is, but I wish I could where them everyday (which I do as often as possible). In the words of Zooey Deschanel, "I rock a lot of polka dots." So, in this outfit, I wore my new polka dot skirt with one of my favorite blouses, that just happens to have polka dots. I got the skirt a few days ago from Forever 21, but had passed it by at first glance, thinking that it would be like many of the skirts there are, too short and thin enough that even a slight breeze picks it up. But, this one is the perfect length even pulled up to have a high waist. Also, it's fully lined and a nice fabric that is perfect for twirling (which is a must for my skirts), but stays where it's supposed to. I'm already plotting to snatch up all of the different colors it comes in!

I liked this outfit too much to just sit around my house, so my friend Timna and I went on a "Summer Adventure," and walked around downtown, ending up at the beach. I insisted that while we were in the area, we absolutely had to go on the carousel. Yes, we have a carousel next to our beach. Unfortunately (or fortunately, I'm not sure), not very many people ever go there, so we had the whole thing to ourselves! I love riding carousels and imagining that I'm riding a unicorn into a magical land, or I'm in the 20's, riding a carousel like in "Midnight in Paris," or something. But, I only got to have my magical carousel ride twice because Timna got bored that it wasn't faster or something and made me leave... But it was still fun!

I hope you feel inspired to ride on the next carousel you see, have lot's of magical adventures, and have a glitterific time doing it!

Pink Pancakes

As previously mentioned, I would eat pancakes for every meal if I could. Especially if they were pink. So, I had to share the recipe I use when making pink pancakes! It's from the Better Homes and Gardens Cook Book, but I add my own pink dye. I made an animation with the ingredients and instructions, but I accidentally made it take a really long time between the pictures, and I had to make two because I had a lot of pictures but for some reason it won't let me do that... But, still. Pink Pancakes. So the last few steps are just combing the two mixtures together, adding a dash of magic (and pink/red dye), and cooking them.

I made a few different kinds such as:

Chocolate Chips

And Sprinkles

Also, while I was in the mind set of Pink Pancakes, I thought "Why not make a Pink Pancakes outfit?" So, I decided that the first thing that comes to mind when I think of pancakes is a lumberjack, and because they're pink, I could be a Lady Lumberjack. So, here's my "Lady Lumberjack" inspired outfit:

Striped Nails

Ok, so who doesn't love some colorful stripes? They're just so fun, whether they're in rainbow socks or bright nail polish! So, Last night, I got out a rainbow of nail polish, and painted stripes all over my nails. I used 8 different colors, and a few address labels to do it. First, I cut the address labels into strips about the width and length of my nails, and laid one down on my first nail with the bottom about a third of the way up. Then, I painted it with my first color. Once that had dried a little bit, I put a different label about two thirds of the way up, and carefully painted starting at the edge of the first color, and filling to the label, like this:

 I folded the label a little bit for that part though, so that it would stay on better, and cover the nail more. After that, I just painted the tips a third color.

I tried to use a different color combination on each finger, but there were a few that I was favoring, like lime, pink, and blue/turquoise. My right hand didn't turn out as well as the let, but over all, I liked how they turned out!

Turquoise Hair & A Scalloped Collar

People ask me a lot how I decided to dye my hair certain colors, and I rarely have a good answer to that. Sometimes, I'll see someone's hair and think "Oh, wow! That's a really pretty color! I should try that the next time I do my hair!", but other times, I might just wake up one morning and go "I think I'll dye my hair blue today." The latter happened one day last summer. At the time, though, I'd only been dying my hair for a month or two, and wasn't allowed to do anything but red or a little bit pinkish yet. So, I was only able to do blue pieces underneath bleached blond hair as a compromise, although it only lasted a week. But, yesterday, my year-long waiting payed off, because I finally got my dream of "Mermaid-blue" hair! Isn't it pretty? I used a mix of Manic-Panic Atomic Turquoise, Ion Color Brilliance Brights Aqua, and Beyond the Zone Huckleberry Blue

 

 And, to top it all off, I received an amazing belated birthday present in the form of this beautiful scalloped collar from romwe!

Finger Waves

Over the weekend, I decided to do something different with my hair (style wise, at least) and started playing around with finger waves. They didn't turn out perfect, but I'll defiantly do them again, because I really liked how it turned out. If you're looking for a good vintage/retro hairstyling book, I have Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennells, which you can look at here, and I use it for everything from a complected up-do, to how to put my hair in rag curls. But, here's basically how I did my hair (sorry, I didn't get very many good pictures so it's not exactly step-by-step):

1) After washing and drying my hair so that it was just a little bit damp, and combing it through, I put it in a side part, and combed it first forward, clipped it, then back, clipped it, and continued with 4 clips. Oh! And because of my bangs, I had to put a palm of mousse in my hair first, and use an extra bobby-pin to keep my bangs in place, but they dried well and stayed all day.

2) Then, I put the rest of my hair in rag curls, starting about parallel with my ears. After that, I put my hair up in a Rosie-Wrap.

3) Wait. Sleep with your hair in the Rosie-wrap, or just for a few hours. Just at least until it dries. With the mousse, it shouldn't take too long to hold. But the rag curls could take a little bit longer, unless you just spray your hair with water until it's damp at first. Sorry if this is confuzing, but I hope I'm not over complicating this too much.

4) Take it all out and spray it with a dash of hair spray!

In the end, my hair reminded me of a star from the 40's or something, so of course I had to make the picture black and white!

4th of July

Happy 4th of July everybody! I love using major holidays as excuses to try pairing different things to make outfits in certain colors that I usually wouldn't wear, and today was no different. Here's what I wore today:

Dress- Francesca's Collections (I just added some red ribbon around the waist)

Lately I've been missing my pink/red hair, especially today, because it would have added just the perfect amount of red to this outfit! So, my solution was to use some old red ribbon from my trim box in my hair with a "Swiss Headband Braid". This is how it turned out:

Mermaid Dress via Kate Gabrielle

About a week ago, Kate Gabrielle from Scathingly Brilliant, one of my favorite blogs, did a guest diy post on Mermaidens, with an amazing scalloped dress. I've just been waiting for my first diy post of my own, and when i saw this, I had to try it for myself. You can see her post here, but here's how I did mine:

Supplies:
-2 colors of fabric paint (Pink & White for mine)
-A plain, white cotton dress (I got mine at h&m)
-A piece of craft foam (I used adhesive foam, which worked well)
-A wooden block/square
-Scissors
-A paintbrush

Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of this part, but you trace a semi-circle onto the foam, with another slightly smaller one inside of it so that it's just a thick semi-circle shape. Then, you cut it out and glue/place it onto the wood to make a stamp. My wood piece was bigger than my foam, but it still worked okay.

Then, you just have to repeatedly cover your stamp with the paint using your brush, and hold it down on the dress with force for a few seconds. Start at the top with just your main color, then add alittle bit of white with each row of scallops.

 At the end, it should look something like this:

I love how pretty the scallops looked, so I added a row of them along the skirt of the dress, and since it reminded me of a cupcake or something, it became my "14th Birthday Dress," and I wore it out to dinner on my birthday like this:
