Style Inspiration: Rayanne Graff

This is my outfit from Friday, but I kept forgetting to post it. It's inspired by Rayanne Graff from My So-Called Life. I watched all of the episodes while I was sick, and felt inspired by Rayanne's awesome style. She's got that whole "I just threw on all the random clothes laying on my floor" sort of look, with all kinds of patterns and colors, but it all just works together perfectly (even if sometimes it really does just look a little homeless). There's also a lot of layering going on, which I tried to achieve, along with a Rayanne-like hair-do. I (of course) needed the single ringlet, curled around a miniature braid, along with about half of my hair pulled up into a scarf. I distributed a couple more small braids throughout my hair too. Like her outfits, Rayanne's hair never seems to be able to decide exactly how it wants to be, so I tried to get that sort of a look too. 

I wore a floral, 60's style of dress from Forever 21, under neath of a vintage, green and blue flannel. I also wore torn fishnets, with a pair of gray and black stockings, and a pair of black docs. Sorry, if the the organization of my photos is kind of weird, but for some reason it wouldn't let me just line them all up.

The poses were pretty easy to figure out for this outfit, as I just needed to look angsty, and throw in a few signature Angela Chase poses. This outfit also kind of worked with my hair, even though it's more like Angela's than Rayanne's. I doubt that Rayanne would be telling me "my hair was holding me back." While I was redyeing it, it looked really cool, with just streaks of the minty color. I took a few pictures of it:

Style Inspiration: Tavi Gevinson

Have I mentioned before just how incredibly awesome Tavi Gevinson is? She's the founder and editor-in-chief of Rookie, which is one of my favorite websites. It's an online magazine aimed towards teenage girls, written mostly by teenage girls, and Tavi writes a lot of articles for it, too. It has really cool articles about being yourself, growing up, and just pretty much anything. There's everything from photo shoot pictures, to essays on the amazingness that is LSP from Adventure Time, to reports on the latest Riot Grrrl happenings. All kinds of girls (and even a few guys) write for it, and they have meetups, where they get huge groups of girls together, and have pretty much a huge party of hanging out. It's pretty much my dream to one day go to one of the meet ups, so hopefully there will be one near us soon. 

It was on Rookie that I first really heard of Riot Grrrls, and the more I hear about it, the more it interests me. I made a sort of flyer for my friends, that has this zine on one side, and some information from Wikipedia on the back.

Now, most of them are at least intrigued by the idea, so we want to start having sort of "Riot Grrrl Club Meetings" every week, where we'd just hang out and discuss issues and things. We've been thinking about joining the Feminism Club at school, but none of us really want to just go in a class room and debate abortion. We'd rather just have something casual, where we could just sit in a circle and have whatever topics we wanted come up. With Riot Grrrls, I think it's cool that it's not just one thing in particular that they're fighting for, it's got a really wide range, with things like Women's rights, Gay rights, Sexual abuse, and all of these other topics. I like that we could be discussing gay marriage one week, and the Slut Walk the next, and have it all tie in.
For my outfit, I'm wearing a T-shirt from a Brawlin' Betties (our local roller derby team) match, and a collar I cut off of a thrift store button down, and drew on with markers. I wore a long dress as a skirt, with the top part folded down, and my hair in a beehive. Last night, I re-bleached my hair, and it turned out kind of cool. I plan to redye it a bright hot pink possibly tomorrow, but the color was kind of a pretty minty color, so I figured I'd leave it for a few days. Also, the rainbow isn't a part of my Tavi Gevinson look, I just went to an Econ Fair at school, and got my face painted. I liked how it looked with my outfit, so I kept it on all day, even through a semi-nice dinner. In the cafeteria, one of the women working there looked at it and told me, "I like you're rainbow! Equality!" and it made me happy, so I left it on.

Regina Spektor and a Pinafore

This is probably one of my favorite pairs of socks. They're just really pretty and cotton candy-like, with the pale pink-and-gray stripes. I bought them at Forever 21 some time in 7th grade, so I've had them for about two years, but luckily they haven't fallen apart yet, because I know that when they do I'll just go into denial and keep them forever. Under my pinafore, I have on my Regina Spektor T-shirt from the concert I went to over the summer.

The Cotton-Candy Selling Cat

Today I feel like a cat who sells cotton candy. I'm wearing my cat hat, and my hair is pink and blue, so it kind of works. My outfit is all pastels and candy stripes, too, which helps. I also feel kind of like Annika, of The Pineneedle Collective, with my bright pink hair extensions and the same purse that she uses on occasion. My friend Michelle (who I'm writing the book with), and I went to see the movie "The Rise of the Guardians" today, and we both really liked it. We were easily the oldest people there who weren't parents, but it was an awesome movie. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it was a lot better than I thought it'd be. We were both freaking out just a little bit though at the fact that Jack Frost in it completely reminded us of a white-haired Lorcan, one of the main characters in our zombie book. There were a lot of similarities. 

Speaking of the book, we're almost done with UnEarthed, and are just about at the end. We're excited to finish it up, but a little bit sad, too. We've been working on it for about six months now, and even if we're nowhere near finished with the editing, it's weird to be almost done. Maybe once it's all done, I'll put some sort of a link to it so that if anyone wants to they can read some of it.

Polka Dots & Poodles

This outfit was actually from months ago, but I was home sick today, so I went through my archives of forgotten outfits, and pulled out this one. Instead of wearing my mentally picked out outfit (inspired by Rayanne from My So-Called Life), I sat at home, watching the aforementioned TV show on Netflix, and eating applesauce. Its weird to look at my earlier blog posts now, and see my hair in all different colors, and seeing the pictures in front of the fireplace, instead of outside. Right now, it's pouring rain out, and I'm just looking out the window, wishing I wasn't sick so I could go run around in it.

Evil Mermaids

My outfit today was inspired by mermaids, but the evil kind. 

 I embraced my blue hair, and made the whole outfit blue and black, with mermaid-like features. I borrowed my mom's black pleated skirt, and put it over a black crinoline, and the pleats reminded me of a mermaid tail, but the kind of stripy part at the bottom. I put my hair in pin curls, then cut a starfish out of black felt and pinned it in. For my makeup, I used a blue eyeshadow, and did a line at my upper lashes, at the crease, and below my lower lashes, each with a cat-eye-type of swoop at the end. I then did a thin back cat-eye, and a few short Twiggy sort of lines on the bottom. For my lipstick, I used Revlon Va-Va-Violet, over lightly applied black eyeliner.

Flower Child

Today I wore my "Happy Dress." The fabric is so happy, it couldn't really have any other name. It's bright red, with daisies and polka dots all over. The skirt is light and twirly, and it's perfect for warmer weather. I also felt kind of mermaid-like, with my blue lips. I really need to get some actual colorful lipstick, because this morning I just used black eyeliner really lightly, then put bright blue eyeshadow over that, and covered it with clear lip gloss to seal it all together. For my eyes, I did a sort of Twiggy-eye, but with light green for the bottom lashes, and purple in the crease. It's very colorful.
