Glitter. Need I Say More?

I'm just going to say it. I love glitter. If I could, I'd glitterify everything. Wouldn't that just be a lovely world? We could architects in change of designing structures made out of glitter, and scientists would be put up to making and populating the world with unicorns. It would be fantastic. There are tons of super awesome articles about glitter on Rookie, so if, like me, you can't get enough of the sparkly substance (wow, that sounded like I was making some kind of drug reference), you should check them out.

We had finals this week, so me brain was too mushy to write any posts. Now, it's much better, so I figured I'd write up about what I wore yesterday. It was after 11 at night, and I really wanted to sleep, but my outfit was too amazing to not take pictures, so I had to. Now I'd like to take some time to point out the most glitterific points of my outfit.

Started out (sorry, I didn't get a before/after picture):

1. The eyes.

I used light purple eyeshadow all over my eye-lid, then smeared some sort of glitter-gel that came with a costume makeup kit across both my upper and lower lids, to provide optimal glitter coverage. Throughout the day, the glitter reflected onto my glasses, and I had glitter-vision. It was awesome.

After that, I just did/used(?) some black winged eyeliner.

2. The lips.

My awesome lipstick only lasted until lunch, when I felt it kind of necessary to wipe it off, so as not to ingest more glitter than I already have over the years, through a lot of glittery lipsticks and glosses. I promise I don't eat glitter. On purpose. Can you eat glitter? I don't know. But any way, I took pictures of the process of putting it on because I figured it wouldn't last all day.

First, start off without anything on your mouth (like left over lipstick/stain, which could mix with the rest of it, and mind of mess it up.)

Then, use some sort of white eyeliner, or very light foundation (I was going to use white eyeliner, but I couldn't find mine, so I used white costume makeup).  Over that, or even instead of it, put a pretty thick coat of clear lip-balm. Mostly these are just to give the rest something to stick too, and to give a more clean slate to start with.

Once that's on, take a light-blue eyeshadow, and sort of dab it on your lips. If you brush it on, it will smear the lip-balm and everything, and make it look kind of funky. Make sure it's pretty even. If you can't find a light blue, you can always use a darker one and mix it with white, or use any other color instead.

Then, you can put another coat of lip-balm on, to seal in the powder, and then put on a coat of glitter. With the lip-balm, you could probably just use powdery glitter, but I think it's best to use some sort of a gel. If you have just super sparkly lip gloss, that can work, but I used one like this, for face painting.

I think it looked pretty rad, and all my friends said that I looked like a glitter princess, which is pretty much the best compliment you could ever give me.

3. The nails.

My sister gave me a bottle of this glittery nail polish from Urban Outfitters for Christmas, and it's amazing. It's like tootie-fruty jelly bellies mixed with unicorn puke. In my pictures it looks almost purple in the bottle, but it's more of a light pink.

A Tribute to Stereotypical Weird Girls

This is sort of my homage to all of the stereotypical weird girls of film, literature, and the world. Not just my quirky sisters, but that character that's sort of a necessity in any elementary-high school set film, most prominently in the 90's and early 2000's. I'm talking that one girl on the playground with her hair in pigtails and/or braids, playing hopscotch or jumping rope, who's been thrown into the story to create some sort of comic oddities. While the bullies may tug her braids and call her names, she's never afraid to go beat the crap out of them. She's always just this awesome bad ass character who's not afraid to be herself. Even if she's hopelessly socially awkward, and usually kind of freaks every one else out, the weird girl is always my favorite character. For example:

Megan, from Max Keeble's Big Move (which is seriously one of the best movies ever). She may not be quite as strange as this type of character sometimes is, but Megan definitely portrays the not-caring-what-every-body-thinks traits, as long as the willingness to stand up to bullies.

Maya, from Dr. Doolittle. I think Maya was pretty much always my favorite character in this movie. I liked how just strange and unique she was, without caring that she was weird. She portrayed not only the weird traits of this kind of character, but the sort of nurturing side, too, when she was taking in animal eggs to hatch and take care of.

Young Gracie, from Miss Congeniality. She's pretty much exactly what I have in mind when describing this character. She's got the braids, the balls, and the social-awkwardness.

There are so many other good examples for this, but these were the best one's I could think of, and that I could find pictures for. These weren't perfect, but I think they're close enough to fit under this category.

Outfit wise, I didn't really have this specifically in mind when getting dressed, so it's not exact, but I think it still has the feel of this kind of character. I feel like if I switched the Docs for high-tops, and the shirt for something with a unicorn on it, it'd be spot on. I could completely see this being worn by a "Weird Girl" character, like, five years later. It kind of already is...

 Mostly, it was the hair that reminded me of this. I pretty much just divided my hair into five sections, and did a fish-tail braid on each one. 

I also realized that almost every one of these characters wears glasses. Coincidence? I think not.

Style Inspiration: Sherlock (BBC)

Today my outfit was inspired by the BBC show, Sherlock. Sorry, it's late and I have finals this week, so I need to go to bed. I'll try and go back and edit this tomorrow, and then I'll write more, about being called Harry Potter, and the awesomeness of Sherlock.

Who Says Red & Pink Have to Clash?

Today it was cold. I usually love it when it finally gets cold and rainy out, but today it was just the worst possible mixture of wind, hail, and a thin (however pretty) dress without a coat. I did wear a sweater, but it wasn't very helpful. It was like, 40-something degrees, and even if that's really not very cold compared to some places, it's like a snow storm for southern California. 

It seems like red and pink are always thought of as being repairable, but since my hair is kind of a big mix of both, this dress seemed appropriate.

The Bear Dress!!

Hello, All! I am very excited to present to you yet another DIY, also with a repurposed skirt! "Three DIYs in two days?!" you may ecstatically ask? I've been trying to make it my New Years resolution to do a better job on this blog, and do more DIYs and things. This seemed like a good way to start. I definitely won't be doing quite this many this often, but I'll try to do at least a couple each month.
Now; On to the dress!!

My inspiration, the beautiful yet expensive dress from La Flux:

Supplies:

-An old skirt (Preferably black or brown, but you could totally do this with pretty much any color and animal! It'd actually be super rad to do like a polka dot dalmatian, or a pink cat or something)

-Less than a yard of matching fabric (doesn't necessarily need to match, but must be at least 1/2 a yard)

-A small piece of fun fabric (I found one with pictures of animals and bears on sale at the craft store, so it was perfect! You could also use pretty much any pattern)

-Felting tools (Felting wool, the pokey needle thing, etc. I used an old hair brush instead of the brushey thing, and it worked fine. Yeah, I really don't know any of the technical terms for these, sorry...)

-Two buttons (Large!)

-An old newspaper (a lot of things could be used to substitute this)

-Scissors

-Measuring tape (or a ruler)

-A pen

A sewing machine

-A ton of whimsy!

*Above is pretty much just what I used for making a pattern for the top. Sorry, I took really terrible instruction pictures!

So, first I made a pattern for the top of the dress. I measured about how wide I'd want it to be, and divided that in half. Then, I folded the newspaper in half, and measured out the length I'd taken on the ruler. That would be along the bottom. Then, I figured out how high it'd need to go, and marked that on the other edge of the paper. (I figured this sounded confusing, so I drew it out)

You can also just draw a little shape for the ears. Make sure both of the patterns are extra big for seam allowance. Then, just cut it out (still folded), and then (unfolded), you can sketch out your bear's face.

Then, just use it like a pattern on the fabric, and cut out two bear head shapes, and two ears. Cut the ears folded, so you'll have less sewing later. You could also do that for the head.

Take one of the head shapes, and this will get the face. I pretty much winged it for the whole felting part, but I mostly followed this tutorial:

I didn't actually need anything to shape the wool, and just pulled pieces of it out, and then laid them on the bear, following a sketch I'd made on the fabric, and just stuck it with the needles wherever I wanted it to go. It's hard to explain, but I think if you try it it make sense.

I did it on the face and ears, and it ended up like this, before I sewed on black buttons for eyes:

Then, I just sewed the bottom along the top of the skirt, and had my mom help me with the straps. I also just cut around the bear picture in my other fabric, and sewed that to the skirt as a pocket, and I had to take in the skirt by a couple inches, because it was too big.

And it ended up like this!
