Happy Zombie-Jesus Day!

Happy Easter/ Zombie-Jesus Day! Ok, again, sorry I haven't posted in a week, but I haven't really been on the computer for more than a few minutes at a time because I've been helping my mom with photo-shoots, and cleaning my room, and doing all kinds of things all week (which was spring break for me and most school-aged people). Today, my mom and I drove down to the Ventura flea-market, which was super awesome, and I got three new very well-priced vintage dresses, a cool vintage skirt, and an alligator suitcase, all of which I'm sure will soon be shown, but I wanted to post zombie pictures/tutorials I took on Tuesday (I think it actually might have been Wednesday now that I think about it).
You can't say that zombies aren't Easter-y. Jesus rose from the dead, and isn't that the whole point of Easter? The whole reborn/coming back to life/new life thing? Plus, zombies are pale. Pastel.
Since it was spring break, and I didn't want to spend the whole time on the computer, I needed activities to keep me occupied. And what better activity than zombiefication? I got my friend Ember to come over, and then dressed us both in some ghoulish threads (is threads still relevant slang? It should be.), and zombiefied us. I don't think we gave me a back-story, but hers was that she was hit in the head with a brick (resulting in a head wound), then fell/was thrown into a freezing river, where she got hypothermia. The result (after a little decomposition) looked like this:

Here's basically how I did it:

 I used white clown makeup super lightly all over her face, blending it down her neck, and then just a little bit on her collarbones (so that they would look pronounced, giving her a more gaunt look). I had her put on super thick black eyeliner, then used black and gray eyeshadow on her upper lids, doing sort of an exaggerated smokey eye-type thing, then used blue under her eyes, so that they'd look kind of sunken and dead.

I used a light blue eye shadow with a thin paintbrush to paint veins near major arteries (the neck, the temples, etc.). I just mixed some water with the makeup so it'd be easier to work with.

I didn't get a good picture of just this on it's own (and I should have done it before the veins but I forgot), but I used gray and blue makeup on a blush-brush to enhance the whole gaunt look. I used it under her cheek bones and collar bones, to make them stand out more. You can also use this near the mouth or on the sides of the nose if you want to look super sunken and corpse-like,

 For her head wound, I used some bright red stage makeup on a Q-tip to draw a line from her hair-line down to her jaw, being careful to follow where something drippy would go, which kind of curves around the bone structure of your face, not just in a straight line. I put extra just at the start of her hair so that it looked like it'd pooled up before dripping. If you (like me) have only ultra-bright red to use, which is not a very good color for aged-zombie blood (any dried blood should be more of a rust color), you can take any sort of brassy brown, or even gold-ish eyeshadow and use that over the red to turn it more of a blood red.
After this, I used a little bit of the white face-makeup on her lips, to drain the color, then dabbed light-blue eyeshadow on them, but not in a perfect lipstick kind of way. I wanted it to look more like her lips were being frozen, so it was more haphazard.

I think for mine I had been stood up for prom or something and then died for my back story, although I'm not quite sure how it happened. Anyway, mine looked like this:

I don't know why, but the cheek-hole thing is my favorite type of decay whenever I do zombie makeup. It's just really fun, and this one's definitely the best one I've done. I outlined a kind of squiggly, imperfect shape on my cheek, then drew some teeth shapes inside. I filled it it (minus the teeth) with red stage makeup, then did the same thing as Ember's wound, putting some brassy color over it, to make it a more bloody red.

My sister gave me this thing of peel-off face-mask for Christmas a while ago, and I've always thought I could use it to do a cool makeup, and I finally got around to trying it. It dries clear, so I put a little bit of it around the boarder of my cheek-hole shape, then waited for it to dry. While I waited, I applied my favorite black lipstick.

Sorry, I didn't get many pictures of the step-by-step of this, but once the mask stuff dried, I rubbed the edges that were touching the wound a little bit so that they just barely peeled off, then finished coloring my wound. I put white stage-makeup on the teeth, outlining them in blackish purple, and drew some veins in purple. I put some yellow around the wound, to make it look kind of puss-y and gross, and also used some blue too. One piece of the mask accidentally peeled all the way off, but I just put some red underneath it and made it look like an extra little wound. All together, I think it looked pretty rad. Plus, it'd really fun to peel off later:

I also may have put multiple colors of food coloring in my hair because I was bored and wanted to have a rainbow on my head.

 Of course, sense we were all dressed up, we had to go do a quick photo shoot.

And of course, while we were at it, why not dress up as witches raising the dead?

The outfits (All clothes are mine, except for Ember's tank-top):
Ember's zombie outfit-
Dress: a hand-me-down from my sister, so I don't know, but I added a corset to the back, which reminds me of Frankenstein's monster for some reason. Gloves: DIY, Socks: Sock It To Me, Shoes: (We actually each got a heel and a flat, to exaggerate our zombie-limps) Heel from Payless, Flat from Target.

 Chloe's zombie outfit:
Dress: Same deal as Ember's (including the corset, but I pinned up one side of it so it'd look kind of tattered), Fishnets (modified to be worn as a shirt): DIY? Originally from F21, Tights: h&m, Shoes: Heel from Payless, Flat from Target.

Ember's witch outfit:
Tank-top: Hers, so I don't know, Skirt: Vintage, Veil: My old dress-up box, Hat: Same as veil

Chloe's witch outfit:
Slip: Vintage, Fishnets and tights are the same as in the zombie outfit. Veil and Cape from my old dress-up box.

Riot Grrrl Documentaries

Hi, everyone! Sorry, I feel bad that I've only posted 3 things so far this month, but first I got sick and then (of course, right as I was typing up a post) our computer started being super wonky and not working, so I haven't been able to do anything the past few days. I have a whole bunch of pictures and things that I need to post from the past few weeks, but I really wanted to post two documentaries I watched today that I thought were really cool and interesting and only increased my undying need to be in a girl gang. I'll give my own descriptions, but, as always, sorry if they're terrible.
1. Dirty Girls
This is an 18 minute documentary shot by Michael Lucid as a high school student in 1996, about a group of 13 year old, 8th grade riot grrrls, called "The Dirty Girls." They are know by that name due to their wearing “clothes you might find in a garbage can,” and rumors that they haven't bathed in ages (which they deny). The girls make their own feminist zines which they distribute around school, much to the horror of their peers, most of whom think that riot grrrl is old news, and that feminism is terribly uncreative. The documentary interviews not only members of the Dirty Girls, but also their peers, as they laugh at the girls and give their views on them. Amber, one of the main Dirty Girls, says some really cool things, though, about how they really just don't care what people think of them, and people hate them for it.

2. Don't Need You - The Herstory of Riot Grrrl
 I think this one's pretty self-explanatory. It's a documentary about the history (or herstory) of the Riot Grrrl movement. It's cool because it interviews all of these amazing women who were founding members of it, including Allison Wolfe and Kathleen Hanna, along with a ton of other people. It's really interesting to watch, and see how the whole thing started and grew, and it's cool to see it all from their perspectives. (I could only find a sort of trailer type of thing for it to have on here, but you can see the whole thing on YouTube here.)

Style Inspiration: Maude (Harold and Maude)

Hi! Sorry, I realized that I haven't posted anything in about a week and a half, but last weekend I got sick, and then I was busy with make-up work and all kinds of other things, and then this weekend I had my friends over to watch the premier of A Very Potter Senior Year (which was supercalifragimazing!!!!) and then I went to a really cool song writing workshop for teenaged girls. put on by Girls Rock Santa Barbara, so I've been busy. But, while I was sick, I watched a gogillian movies and every episode of Freaks and Geeks and Portlandia (at least every one on Netflix), but one of the movies I watched (for the umpteenth time) was Harold and Maude, which is definitely up there on my list of favorite movies. Of course, I was completely inspired by Maude and her awesome style, hence this whole post.
If you haven't seen it before, Harold and Maude is basically about this morose, maybe 19/20 year old guy (Harold), who goes to funerals for fun and sets up intricate fake suicides for his mother's benefit ("No, I would not say 'benefit.'") as a recreational sport. At a funeral (where else?) he meets Maude, a 79 year old free-spirited woman who steals cars ("I'm merely acting as a gentle reminder: here today, gone tomorrow, so don't get attached to things now.") and wishes she could become a sunflower. Together, they save/steal trees to replant them in the forest ("Grab the shovel, Harold."), do somersaults (because "Harold, everyone has the right to make an ass out of themselves. You just can't let the world judge you too much."), and soon fall in love. The whole thing is set to an awesome soundtrack of nothing but Cat Stevens, with "If You Want to Sing Out" acting as a sort of theme, and is all grainy and saturated and 70's looking. Also, Harold drives a hearse. It's an awesome movie. Plus, I love the line when Maude says, "The earth is my body; my head is in the stars." then asks Harold who said that, and when he says he doesn't know she replies, "Well, I suppose I did, then."
If you have seen the movie, then I'm sorry if that's a bad description of it. Feel free to give your own or your over-all thoughts of the movie in the comments.
I wore my sunflower dress, because I think Maude would love it, and totally want to borrow it (if she didn't just steal it in order to remind me not to get too attached), along with a white coat and tights with a pink scarf, because they reminded me of this illustration:

 Unfortunately, I don't have an awesome yellow umbrella like she does, but I grabbed a clear one, because she'd never carry a black one. Of course I had to grab a shovel for some of my pictures, too.
Maude almost always wears her hair in two long braids, pinned over her head, so I braided my extensions into my hair, and pinned them up, throwing in some yellow daisies, because of her fascination with sunflowers and her and Harold's conversation about daisies. She also wears pretty little makeup, except for a light blue eyeshadow and a light lipstick. So, I did the eyeshadow and used a rose colored lip-liner and a similarly colored chap-stick type of thing.

A Princess in Fishnets

Outfit Details- Sweater: (My Mom's) Gap, Slip: Vintage, Tights: #forever21, Socks: Betsy Johnson, Shoes: Daddyo's

I'm not sure which (possibly multiple ones), but one of my friends told me that I looked like a princess in fishnets today. I liked that description, so I used it as my title. I was asked a few times if it was my birthday, to which I simply replied, "No. I just like crowns."
It's one of my many dreams to have enough crowns that I'd have one for every outfit, and so far I have one pink/purple plastic one, three fake-flower ones (two of which I made yesterday), one real flower one (which I plan to keep wearing when it's all dried up), and now this sparkly pipe-cleaner-and-jem one. I made it yesterday because I was "gettin' crafty" and had pulled out my glue gun, and had fake flowers and crown-making things strewn all over. I not only made three very pretty crowns, but I finally got around to dying my slip from white to fuchsia. This is actually the slip I wore yesterday, but it was white then. I used this tutorial on Rookie for dying it.
Today I borrowed/stole an old sweater from my mom, put it on backwards, twisted up one side of the bottom, tucked the resulting tail-thing up under, and grabbed the hem, twisting it around to create a sort of a draping effect. It came out after about five minutes, so I had to keep fixing it, but it was still cool. I wore it backwards because in the 9th (and unfortunately final as far as I can tell) book in Vampire Kisses, Stormy (who is probably one of the coolest people/vampires ever)is described in one scene as wearing a blood-red cardigan backwards, so that it makes a deep V in the back, and that just sounded really cool. I would have tried to find a red sweater, but that would have clashed with my slip, so I went with kind of a charcoal color. I also wore my newly-fuchsia slip, ripped fishnets, frilly floral socks, and my cat shoes.
For my makeup, I wanted to try and match my slip, so I smeared crimson lipstick on my eye-lids in lieu of eyeshadow, and used rose lip-liner under my eyes. Then, I put thick black eyeliner on my upper-lids, and thinly over the lip-liner underneath. Then, I drew a tiny heart under my eye, and put on dark purple lipstick with a layer of the same crimson lipstick I used on my eyes over it.

Girl Talk

Today, Kate Nash's new album Girl Talk came out in the US, so naturally I woke up early to buy the album (which was and possibly still is on sale) which is completely amazing. I feel like anyone who's only heard her first album, Made of Bricks, and even just some of her second on, My Best Friend Is You, would probably hear this on, and just be really confused, because a lot of the songs sound completely different than the majority of her previous ones, but I really like them. I kind of outlined this more in my post about her song 3AM (which was also about her musical evolution and all of that), but if you've heard Mansion Song, or any of the Death Proof EP or even Take Me To A Higher Plane, than Girl Talk just kind of makes sense. And personally, I love it.
I like that there are more pop-y sounding songs, like 3AM or OMIGOD!, but then there's Rap For Rejection (which kind of reminds me of Knock 'em Out by Lily Allen mixed with Mansion song, but that might be one of those things that only makes sense to me), or Sisters which I love because throughout it you can just hear the strain on her throat from all of the screaming and yelling, but it just sounds kind of amazing. That's only the very beginning of the amazing songs on this album, so I would completely and totally suggest getting it, or at least listening to it through YouTube or something, because it's awesome.
Also, has anyone else seen her video for Girl Gang? Because it's pretty much the most badass thing ever, and it makes me really want to go find a girl gang to hang out with so that we can have vintage slip-clad slumber parties and wear creepers and go beat up mean boys and force them into girl clothes and play awesome punk shows together. That's basically all I want in life.

For my outfit, I took inspiration from her amazing intro video for the album, which featured a ton of pretty, girly things, like frilly socks, sparkly aprons, and victory rolls and pigtails. Without meaning to, my outfit ended up all white but it works. I wore a vintage slip (which I dyed fuchsia after school and plan to wear tomorrow), with a lacy apron, over a couple of vintage crinolines. I put a very glittery purple belt over the apron, and wore polka-dotted nylons with these kickass majorette boots that I found at a thrift store yesterday for 5 dollars!! They are super amazing, and make me feel like Lily (of Dash & Lily) whenever I put them on. When I found them, I was so in disbelief that they existed, let alone were 5 dollars and in my less than common 9.5 or so shoe size, that I made my mom read the tag too before I let myself even try them on, in fear of crushing disappointment at them not fitting. But, alas, they fit, and are super beautiful, and are really nice for twirling. They're even a teensy bit big, which only makes me feel more like Lily, especially when they make a happy little clippety-clack as I walk down the street, singing "These boots were made for... Slipping out of... Lalala.... Hahaha" under my breath. I promise I'm not crazy. If you've read Dash & Lily's Book of Dares, that makes complete sense.
And, to explain the flowers; Michaels was having a sale on a certain brand of fake flowers, with 50% off, so I kind of went crazy and came home with arm fulls of flowers, which I plan to use to make a gogillian flower crowns. I've already made two, so I'll have to do a tutorial for my next one.
